What a Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder Can Do for You

By: JudyAnn Marquez

When you have bird feeders in your backyard, you will not like it when squirrels and chipmunks begin to run all over the place seemingly attracted by the bird seed. It is not good to have these squirrels and chipmunks around the feeders for they tend to scare birds away. As much as possible, consider squirrel proofing any bird feeders that you have at home. When it comes to the squirrels, they are excellent jumpers. It is easy for squirrels to claw their way up on tree branches. A squirrel can get really determined especially when there is a source of food in sight. Most of the time, squirrels will go near bird feeders when the bird feed includes sunflower seeds, nuts, cracked corns, and suet. This is why you will find great use for a bird feeder pole. A bird feeder pole allows the feeder to be placed at a much greater height which makes it more eye-catching for the birds. In this case, when you position a bird feeder pole, see to it that no tree branches are near it to prevent a squirrel infestation. You have the option of getting a complete bird feeder pole or you can get a pole separately and attach it to a bird feeder.
By putting a metal or plastic cone on top of your bird feeder, you are actually squirrel proofing it, simple and easy. Here is where the smooth surfaces of the metals or plastics easily prevent the squirrels from having something to hold on to. The more times the squirrels fail to reach the bird feeders, the more stress they will feel and this is what will cause them to stop attempting to jump onto the feeders. You can resort to another thing if you want your bird feeder to be squirrel proof. What you need to do is add some dried or crushed cayenne pepper to the bird feed. Here, the birds will not be able to taste the spices and this is why they will not be bothered by this but the squirrels can taste the spices and this will make the feed unappealing to them. Another tip to make your bird feeders squirrel proof is to hang your feeders using a horizontal wire with spinners. Squirrels cannot climb in the wire which will lessen their chances of reaching the feeds. If the squirrel is able to climb the wire, you have the spinners as a backup and these will eventually cause the squirrel to fall to the ground.
In this case, there are limits when it comes to squirrel proofing your bird feeders. Do not attempt to use the feed as bait for the squirrels by adding poison. There is nothing good that can result from this. Also try not to grease up the poles when it comes to your bird feeders. You do not want the grease getting onto the feathers of the birds and the fur of the squirrels since this can cause illnesses. You will not be able to squirrel proof a bird feeder with grease and this is something to think about. If you are still looking for ways to squirrel proof your bird feeders, do not be discouraged. Why don't you set up a nut feeder for those squirrels, chipmunks, and raccoons? This sure-fire tip should be enough for you to have a more peaceful and relaxing bird feeding.
